This impressive architectural panel is meticulously handcrafted from the flattened, cured base (spathe) of the native sago palm petiole. Traditionally, dozens of these structural panels were structurally lashed together to completely line the soaring underside ceilings and gables inside the korambo—the highly sacred men's ceremonial houses. This specific artifact features striking, symmetrical geometric motifs rendered in bold earth-based pigments, including local white clay, charcoal black, and warm ochre tones. The stylized circular and curved patterns are deeply rooted in Kwoma cosmology, symbolizing clan totems, ancestor spirits, or protective forces.
