Offered for sale is a rare and heavily weathered 15-inch antique crocodile head canoe prow from the Middle Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, acquired directly from the Ron Perry Arizona Room collection. Created by the Iatmul people, these highly symbolic carvings were secured at the water lines of dugout canoes to harness ancestral crocodile spirit power, protecting the crew from both physical dangers and malicious spirits during river voyages. When the functional five-to-seven-year lifespan of the dugout canoe ended, prized ancestral prows like this specimen were carefully cut away from the rotting vessel to be preserved by the clan.
This powerful, early example is hand-carved from a single piece of indigenous hardwood, realistically rendering the reptile's profile with deep structural grooves, traditional geometric scarification marks, and a deeply eroded, organic texture indicative of extensive exposure to river water and elements.
The prow was field-collected by Ron Perry, a globally renowned expert and one of the most respected Pacific tribal art authorities of the 20th century. Beginning his expeditions in 1964, Perry spent over 40 years traveling by canoe up remote waterways and trekking unmapped terrains to collect authentic pieces directly from traditional clans. His credibility in the field is unmatched: following Papua New Guinea's independence in 1975, the PNG National Cultural Council appointed him to manage Village Arts, their government-run indigenous artifact center. This is an outstanding museum-quality display piece with exceptional presence, deep native patination, and profound historical character, making it an exceptional addition to any premier collection of Oceanic, ethnographic, or tribal art.
