Offered for sale is a striking, museum-quality Karahut (or Karaut) ceremonial headhunter’s ornament from the East Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. Historically considered the exclusive prerogative of initiated warriors who had proven their status in battle, these highly sacred adornments were crafted to serve as lethal protective amulets and badges of elite military rank.

During tribal warfare, the Karahut was not casually draped; the warrior gripped the thick braided handle firmly between his teeth. This placed the shell-encrusted spirit face directly over his mouth, effectively masking his human identity, terrifying his enemies, and channeling the ferocious protection of a wild boar or ancestral spirit. This exceptional example features a densely hand-woven base of indigenous plant fiber, completely encrusted with meticulously sewn nassa (cowrie) shells that form a dynamic, textured visage. The base is anchored by two large, beautifully curved, and highly polished wild boar tusks that flare outwards to frame the central spirit face. Expanding its dramatic visual scale, the neckline transitions into dual-hanging side extensions adorned with native bivalve seashells and trade beads.

Following the pacification of regional warfare in the mid-20th century, these objects transitioned into supreme symbols of prestige, worn by clan elders during sacred Sing-Sing festivals. With its excellent preservation, rich native patina, and authentic martial character, this piece stands as an elite addition to any collection of Oceanic, ethnographic, or Pacific Islands tribal art.
