This print is part of a Tiki Portrait Series, in which each work presents a tightly cropped view of a Polynesian pop icon inspired by the history of tiki culture. The use of strong linear elements and a flowing composition give each piece a distinctly modern, abstract feel.

It is inspired by a vintage tiki mug produced by the Otagiri Mercantile Company (OMC) in the 1960s. Manufactured in Japan, these mugs found their way into tiki bars and restaurants all across the United States—from Tiki Bob’s in San Francisco to Hawaii Kai in New York City.

The design incorporates Māori-inspired elements, creating bold, dramatic linear patterns that give the piece a strong graphic presence. The work is titled “Peanut,” a nickname given to this style of mug thanks to its distinctive color, rounded form, and textured surface—yes, very much like a peanut shell.
