Offered for sale is an impressive 15.5-inch traditional crocodile canoe prow from the Middle Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, dated 2003 and featuring the carved signature of the indigenous Iatmul artist. Acquired directly from the renowned Ron Perry Arizona Room collection, this piece serves as a striking contemporary continuation of a deep-seated regional tradition. Known historically as a core component of dugout watercraft, these powerful carvings were created by the Iatmul people to adorn the bows of their vessels, utilizing ancestral crocodile spirit power to protect the canoe and its passengers from physical and spiritual dangers during river navigation. This example is hand-carved from a single piece of indigenous hardwood and features a highly stylized crocodilian head merging into a hollowed-out mount, beautifully detailed with deeply incised geometric scales and prominent relief carving.
The prow was field-collected by Ron Perry, a globally renowned expert and one of the most respected Pacific tribal art authorities of the 20th and early 201st centuries. Beginning his expeditions in 1964, Perry spent over 40 years traveling by canoe up remote waterways and trekking unmapped terrains to collect authentic pieces directly from traditional clans. His credibility in the field is unmatched: following Papua New Guinea's independence in 1975, the PNG National Cultural Council appointed him to manage Village Arts, their government-run indigenous artifact center. This specific dated and signed carving highlights the enduring artistic legacy of the Sepik region into the modern era, making it an exceptional, documented addition to any collection of Oceanic, ethnographic, or tribal art.
