The Goof
by Matty Rocket, 2026
Original, signed artwork
24 x 36
Acrylic on hand-stretched, gallery-wrapped canvas with a 1.5" depth
This painting is part of a Tiki Portrait Series, in which each work presents a tightly cropped view of a Polynesian pop icon inspired by the history of tiki culture. The use of strong linear elements and a flowing composition give each piece a distinctly modern, abstract feel.
It is based on “The Goof,” one of the earliest icons in tiki culture. The figure originated atop the roof of Christian’s Hut, a pioneering tiki bar & restaurant from the 1940s. The Goof was a large, whimsical carved head, often interpreted as a symbol of joyful overindulgence. Early matchbook covers even referred to it as the “Big Opu,” using the Hawaiian word for “stomach.”
Regarded as one of the first recognizable tiki icons, this piece draws its inspiration from graphics featured on the restaurant's menu.
Please note that photos may not accurately reflect the scale of the work. The painting measures 24 x 36 x 1.5 inches.
